About the Author

Edward T. Howley, PhD, FACSM, FNAK, earned his bachelorÂ’s degree from Manhattan College and his masterÂ’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He then completed a one-year postdoctoral appointment at Penn State University and was hired in 1970 as a faculty member at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Howley taught a variety of courses, including an undergraduate course in fitness testing and prescription and undergraduate and graduate courses in exercise physiology. He retired in 2007 and holds the rank of professor emeritus. In addition to the previous editions of this book, Dr. Howley has authored three books, four book chapters, and more than 60 research articles dealing with exercise physiology, fitness testing, and prescription. He is a fellow in the National Academy of Kinesiology and served as chair of the Science Board of the PresidentÂ’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in 2006-2007. In 2007-08 he served on the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee that evaluated the science related to physical activity and health and generated a report for use by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to write the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Most of Dr. HowleyÂ’s volunteer efforts have been with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He was involved in the development of certification programs and served as president in 2002-03. He served as editor in chief of ACSMÂ’s Health & Fitness Journal for seven years and as chair of the program planning committee for the annual ACSM Health and Fitness Summit meeting. In 2007, Howley was recognized for his professional contributions with the ACSM Citation Award. In his leisure time, he likes to golf, ride his bike, travel, and play with his grandchildren. Dixie L. Thompson, PhD, FACSM, FNAK, is vice provost and dean of the graduate school at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and is a professor in the department of kinesiology, recreation, and sports studies. She graduated from the 2008 class of the Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Bryn Mawr Summer Institute, held at Bryn Mawr College. The Summer Institute is a professional development program dedicated to the advancement of female leaders in administration of higher education. She also participated in the 2009-2010 Academic Leadership Development Program sponsored by the Southeastern Conference Academic Consortium. Dr. Thompson focuses her research on the health benefits of exercise for women and techniques used for body composition assessment. She is the author of over 70 peer-reviewed publications and numerous articles for fitness professionals and general audiences. She is a former associate editor in chief for ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal and former editor in chief for ACSM's Fit Society Page Newsletter. Dr. Thompson is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and a member of the ACSM Board of Trustees. She is a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology.Â She is a past president of the Southeast Chapter of ACSM and former chair of the Physical Fitness Council for the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Dr. Thompson received her BA in physical education and MA in exercise physiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She eaarned her PhD from the University of Virginia.

The 6th edition has more information. Just completed a WITS personal training certification that required this 7th edition. A classmate had the 6th edition and the appendix had more useful info in it. The page numbers from the 7th to the 6th edition only varied by 2 or 3 pages. I would rather have the 6th edition.

Worst book I've ever read. Constantly gives contradicting information to the point you can't trust anything it says. Also makes statement about high vitamin E intake causing strokes based off 1 study that only had 50,000 people in it. There were almost the SAME amount of people had strokes taking vit E as the people that took a placebo. The author didn't put much effort into researching facts. One chapter tells you to use certain #'s for sedentary people to find their calories needed for day, then uses low activity #s instead in the case study.

Must have a basic phys. background to understand quite a bit of the language. It is a great text if you already are familiar with Ex. Phys.

My husband will be using the book for class and will us it later when he will need to look up stuff when he needs it.

I bought it to get certified as Personal Trainer, great book! Lot of information, well explained, a lot of external tools to make the learning expierence easier

Lyle Saxon's only novel vividly captures the lives of the people who inhabit the Louisiana Cane River plantation community, which served as a crucible for race relations in the early twentieth century. The story revolves around Famie, a Creole girl whose ancestors-free people of color-rivaled the white planters in wealth and culture.

With the end of slavery, Famie is an outcast, scorned by the whites because of her mixed heritage and unwilling to associate with the sharecroppers who are descendants of slaves. An illicit love affair with a white outlaw leaves Famie with a son, Joel. Her dream is for Joel to someday prosper in white society. Famie's struggle to survive within a rigid caste system defined by race and class clearly distinguishes this neglected masterpiece of American fiction.

Lyle Saxon (1891-1946) ranks among Louisiana's most outstanding writers. He is also the author of Lafitte the Pirate, Fabulous New Orleans, Old Louisiana, Father Mississippi: The Story of the Great Flood of 1927, and The Friends of Joe Gilmore and coauthor of Gumbo Ya-Ya: Folk Tales of Louisiana. All are published by Pelican.

A foreword by Chance Harvey has been included in this new edition. While a student at Tulane University, Harvey came across a collection of letters addressed to Saxon that became the focus of her dissertation on him, for which she won the John T. Monroe Fellowship for Dissertation Research. She has published her research as The Life and Selected Letters of Lyle Saxon with Pelican.

About the Author
Lyle Saxon (1891-1946) ranks among Louisiana's most outstanding writers. During the 1920s and 1930s he was the central figure in the regionís literary community, and was widely known as a raconteur and bon vivant. In addition to Father Mississippi, Lafitte the Pirate, and Children of Strangers, he also wrote Fabulous New Orleans, Old Louisiana, The Friends of Joe Gilmore, and was a co-author of Gumbo Ya-Ya, with Edward Dreyer and Robert Tallant. During the Depression, he directed the state WPA Writers Project, which produced the WPA Guide to Louisiana and the WPA Guide to New Orleans.
