William Bruce Wheeler received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1967. He is co-author of DISCOVERING THE GLOBAL PAST (2012), DISCOVERING THE AMERICAN PAST (2012), and DISCOVERING THE WESTERN PAST (2008). He has also written books on Tennessee history and the Tellico Dam.

Lorri Glover received her Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1996 and is the John Francis Bannon, S.J., Professor of History at Saint Louis University. First off, this book is very well written. Has a nice flow to it and is easy to understand. That said...This book reminds me of how the government will spend millions of dollars on a study to tell you something you already know: "After an exhaustive multi-year study costing $10 million dollars, we have concluded that ice is cold to the touch." This book is very much like that. I can't think of one single concept presented in the book that isn't already common knowledge. Example: Hard work and perseverance can make up for lack of talent. Who doesn't already know this? Here's another one: People who like what they are doing (passion), usually do better than those who do not. Every single point made in this book is about that profound. And, if you are looking for proven ways to increase you own "grit," forget about it--they are not there.This material might make for a good 10-page whitepaper, but it isn't nearly deep enough to make into a 300 page book. Because of that, there is just major filler in the form of stories about successful people.Lastly, like another reviewer pointed out, this book has a self-righteous undertone to it. The author burns a lot of ink making sure you think she's smart and important.I'll save you $20: The most successful people work really hard at something they like and don't give up.

I normally never post a review on Amazon, but in this case I simply could not stop mysefl from posting it, as I had great expectations about this book after seeying the TED talk of Ms. Duckworth and hearing a Freakonomics podcast with her. In the end, I was disappointed.Please also excuse grammar/ spelling, as I'm writing this from Russia and I'm not a native English speaker.This book tells us that grit (and not talent or luck) is essential for success in life.The reader will find multiple anecdotes on how so-and-so achieved much by perseverence, passion and not giving up.So half of the book is dedicated to showing a reader how important is grit for success (quite convincingly, but to my taste, way too extensively; couple of anecdotes and studies mentioned would have done as good as these several chapters). Along with anecdotes some (quite robust) scientific evidence is given.What the book lacks completely, is scientifically based advice HOW TO BUILD GRIT. As someone, who struggles to be gritty in my daily life, I had great hopes to find valuable hints in this book. There are a few, but very "soft" ones (like the author assumes they should work, but being honest with the reader, concedes that there is no evidence behind these tips).

I found this book to be the perfect hybrid of informative and motivating. If you're looking for a book that will help educate you as to what you should do in your life and how you can be successful doing it, then this is the book for you. It lays out chapter-by-chapter both the science and the steps you'll need to take in order to make changes in your life that will lead you to success or at least put you on the path towards it. The mix of anecdotes, profiles, scientific studies, and personal stories all combine to form a really easy-to-read and educational book that is laid out and displayed in a simple yet interesting way. Below I took a crack at the things I'm going to do now going forward as a result of reading this book:1. Define what success looks like (i.e., I want to get into politics and would eventually like to become a Senator)2. Clearly define my goals in terms of short-term, medium-term and long-term3. Assign myself stretch goals4. Reflect and learn from any obstacles or challenges or failures faced5. Begin deliberate practice in my field (repeatedly stepping outside my comfort zone and trying activities beyond my current abilities)6. Seek a coach and / or mentor7. Gather and then grow a support network of friends, family, and industry professionals8. Become even more obsessed / interested in my field and consume myself with news, books, articles, lectures, etc.9. Learn from others who are where I want to be10. Never become complacent or satisfied

I commend the author for her effort on this book. The stories of people with the ability to persist are lively and interesting, but the overall feeling is of reading small vignette style biographies of people who are smarter, better, and more talented than you are, with anecdotal insights sprinkled throughout.There's a measure of inspiration in her foundational message that, through hard work and persistence, you can become the best version of yourself. Her main point is that it's unlikely that you know your own limits, and that the act of striving against them each day can take you to an unexpectedly good place. However, the true value of this book would have been to teach us the best methods for increasing and maintaining our own grit, and to show that those methods are proven through research. Unfortunately, that doesn't yet exist because the research hasn't been conducted, except in a preliminary fashion.Because that answer doesn't exist, the book and stories are reduced to a collection of recitations of interviews of successful people, not unlike other business and self-help books. It has a dusting of authority from the author herself, since she has substantially contributed to the field. An interested reader can glean their own lessons from that material, in additions to the insights the author provides. Still, the book lacks true weight, and would be greatly served by an update in a few years as the author and her peers conduct more research on the subject.

I know that since the beginning of time people have thought it was the end times. So it would be easy to discount or ignore all the "signs" all around us these days. Reading Revelation is like going into a foreign country and trying to understand the road, street and merchant signs leading the way throughout the cities. Some of the signs are pretty standard and understandable, while others have you scratching your head, looking through the tourist/language dictionary and asking a citizen to help you. Well, John MacArthur is the "citizen" and this book is the dictionary. What's amazing is that you perk up and thinks thoughts like "I didn't know that", "wow, it's like reading the headlines today", "that makes perfect sense", "goodness, I will need to spend more time looking through the OT and NT scripture references". and "I love the history lessons embedded through it all". This is not a elementary age study...John doesn't insult his readers with the watered down, tickle the ears, new age nonsense that so many are peddling these days. The book of Revelation has a very serious message...that includes severe warnings and a blessed hope for those who are serious about learning the Truth found in God's last book to us. John MacArthur treats it with the respect it deserves. .

I just finished the book last night. For someone searching for help in interpreting the Bible, MacArthur is at the top. To have a book dedicated solely to Revelation is a blessing! In this book, MacArthur explains each passage of Revelation and, in the process, takes away the frightening sounds and visions it conjures up in our minds and brings great relief and joy to believers.This is the third book I have read of MacArthur's, whom I just discovered. I am going now to look for another of his books.Truly a remarkable book. A must-read for both believers and nonbelievers -- but especially unbelievers!

La metodologia empleada del Ps MacArthur es excelene. Explica absolutamente todo de una manera muy organzada, franca y objetiva. Tiene un estilo practico y sencillo para escribir. Recomiendo leer el libro de Apocalipsis junto con esta guia de estudio. Creo que todo cristiano renacido de nuevo necesita entender las promesas tan valiosas que tiene el libro del Apocalipsis, Debo decir que los escritos de MacArthur son muy apegados a la Biblia. No me ha defraudado ninguno, pues en estos tiempos abunda literaruta "cristiana" fuera de la realidad Biblica en extremo.

I read this book along with another commentary to study revelation, this book was well worth the money, MacArthur does a great job explaining the symbolism in revelation I.e. the dragon, woman with 12 stars, the beast etc,. MacArthur tackles this project from a premillennialism, pre trib, futuristic, literal point of view. Although some disagree on end time studies the literal point of view ( which MacArthur uses) explains away a lot of the disagreement and controversy surrounding the book of revelation. Highly recommend!

This study of Revelation was an excellent resource. I didn't find it to be sensationalistic or mystical. Instead it was a straight and sober, reverent study of a Bible book that I have come to expect from John MacArthur. If your goal is to be entertained in the way that the History channel tries to present the Bible, and especially end-time theology, this is not the book for you. If your goal is to study Revelation section, by section, while having all of the symbols and cross-references to the old testament explained...you will thoroughly enjoy this book. I just want to point out that I thought John MacArthur spent a little more time than normal explaining various denominational interpretations of certain key passages of the book. He is normally very unapologetic about his theology (and I like that), but in this case he took a more inclusive tone. He still firmly states where he stands, but he explains where some of the big interpretative disagreements are, and the alternatives, without a lot of judgement.

Ayatsuji reinvigorates the classical English mysteries of Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Ellery Queen, and John Dickson Carr by stripping them down to their essentials and examining their moving parts. In this novel, six members of the Kyoto University Mystery Club—each taking the alias of a famous mystery writer—assemble on an abandoned island and take up residence in a decagonally shaped house. Naturally, soon enough the students begin to be killed off, and the race is on to discover the murderer's identity. Meanwhile, back on the mainland, two members of the club who chose not to go receive mysterious letters that lead them to believe that something is afoot on the island. Along with an enthusiastic partner, they set about trying to solve another mystery from years past, which has connections to the island. Ayatsuji leaves no doubts about his intentions, making copious references to Christie's And Then There Were None, and even the characters are well aware that they have stumbled into a work of their favorite type of fiction. The metafictional trappings are good fun, but they wouldn't mean much if the mystery itself wasn't equally fun and tricky. And it is.
