Chan S. Park is currently a Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Auburn University. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering from Purdue University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, respectively. Over his 25-year academic career, he has been actively involved in a variety of areas of research, teaching, and professional consulting. His work has been recognized internationally in the fields of engineering economics, strategic and economic decisions within service sectors, financial engineering (real options valuation), risk analysis, and capital budgeting. He also authored or coauthored leading textbooks on the related subjects, including Contemporary Engineering Economics (Prentice Hall), and Advanced Engineering Economics (John Wiley & Sons). Why Fundamentals of Engineering Economics?

Engineering economics is one of the most practical subject matters in the engineering curriculum, but it is always challenging and an everchanging discipline. Contemporary Engineering Economics (CEE) was first published in 1993, and since then we have tried to reflect changes in the business world in each new edition, along with the latest innovations in education and publishing. These changes have resulted in a better, more complete textbook, but one that is much longer than it was originally intended. This may present a problem: today, covering the textbook in a single term is increasingly difficult. Therefore, we decided to create Fundamentals of Engineering Economics (FEE) for those who like Fundamentals but think a smaller, more concise textbook would better serve their needs.

This text aims not only to provide sound and comprehensive coverage of the concepts of engineering economics, but also to address the practical concerns of engineering economics. More specifically, this text has the following goals:

This text is intended for use in the introductory engineering economics course. Unlike the larger textbook (CEE), it is possible to cover FEE in a single term, and perhaps even to supplement it with a. few outside readings or cases. Although the chapters in FEE are arranged logically, they are written in a flexible, modular format, allowing instructors to cover the material in a different sequence.

We decided to streamline the textbook by retaining the depth and level of rigor in CEE, while eliminating some less critical topics in each chapter. This resulted in reducing the total number of chapters by four chapters in two steps. Such core topics as the time value of money, measures of investment worth, development of project cash flows, and the relationship between risk and return are still discussed in great detail.

• First, we eliminated the three chapters on cost accounting, principles of investing, and capital budgeting. We address these issues in other parts of the textbook, but in less depth than was contained in the deleted chapters.
• Second, we consolidated the two chapters on depreciation and income taxes into one chapter, thus eliminating one more chapter. This consolidation produced some unexpected benefits—students understand depreciation and income taxes in the context of project cash flow analysis, rather than a separate accounting chapter.
• Third, moving the inflation material from late in the textbook to the end of the equivalence chapters enables students to understand better the nature of inflation in the context of time value of money.
• Fourth, the project cash flow analysis chapter (Chapter 9) is significantly streamlined—it begins with the definitions and classifications of various cost elements that will be a part of a project cash flow statement. Then, it presents the income tax rate to use in developing a project cash flow statement. It also presents the appropriate interest rate to use in after-tax economic analysis. Finally, it illustrates how to develop a project cash flow statement considering (1) operating activities, (2) investing activities, and (3) financing activities.
• Fifth, the handling project uncertainty chapter (Chapter 10) has been consolidated by introducing the risk-adjusted discount rate approach and investment strategies under uncertainty, but eliminating the decision-tree analysis.
• Finally, the chapter on understanding financial statements has been moved to the end of the book as a capstone chapter, illustrating that a corporation does not make a large-scale investment decision on an engineering project based on just profitability alone. It considers both the financial impact on the bottom-line of business as well as the market value of the corporation.

FEE is significantly different from CEE, but most of the chapters will be familiar to users of CEE. Although we pruned some material and clarified, updated, and otherwise improved all of the chapters, FEE should still be regarded as an alternative version of CEE.

Although FEE is a streamlined version of CEE, we did retain all of the pedagogical elements and supporting materials that helped make CEE so successful. Some of the features are:

• Each chapter opens with a real economic decision describing how an individual decision maker or actual corporation has wrestled with the issues discussed in the chapter. These opening cases heighten students' interest by pointing out the real-world relevance and applicability of what might otherwise seem to be dry technical material.
• There are a large number of end-of-chapter problems and exam-type questions varying in level of difficulty; these problems thoroughly cover the book's various topics.
• Most chapters contain a section titled "Short Case Studies with Excel," enabling students to use Excel to answer a set of questions. These problems reinforce the concepts covered in the chapter and provide students with an opportunity to become more proficient with the use of an electronic spreadsheet.

Cancer prevention facts to add to your diet

-Approximately one third of all cancers are directly related to diet.

-A diet containing three or four weekly servings of broccoli, nothing too excessive, was shown to be sufficient to protect individuals from colon polyps.

-Cruciferous vegetables (brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale) should be lightly cooked and thoroughly chewed when eaten in order to fully benefit from their anti-cancer potential. Chewing releases the active molecules.

-Freshly crushed garlic is by far the best source of anti-cancer compounds and should be preferred over supplements.

-The key to benefiting from the anti-cancer effects of soy lies in consuming about 50 grams per day of the whole food, such as raw (edamame) or dry roasted soybeans. Supplements containing isoflavones are not an acceptable alternative to the whole food and should be avoided.

-Colon cancer appears to be one of the cancers on which curcumin may have the greatest positive impact. The daily addition of a teaspoon of turmeric to soups, salad dressings, or pasta dishes is a simple way of providing curcumin intake sufficient to prevent the development if cancer.

-Green Tea contains large amounts of catechins, compounds that boast many anti-cancer properties. To maximize the preventative effects afforded by tea, select Japanese green teas, allow for an eight-to-ten minute brewing period and always drink freshly brewed tea, and avoiding Thermoses.

-Eating cranberries should be preferred over drinking cranberry juice.

-The best way to increase omega-3 levels in diet is to eat fatty fish (wild salmon, sardines, and mackerel) once or twice a week or add one tablespoon of freshly-milled flax seeds to your breakfast cereal.

-Eating two tomato sauce-based meals per week may lower your risk of developing prostate cancer by up to 25%.

-Citrus fruits are essential foods in cancer prevention: for their capacity to act directly on cancerous cells as well as their potential for enhancing the anti-cancer effects of other phytochemical compounds present in diet.

-The resveratrol present in red wine possesses powerful anti-cancer activity which may be responsible for the beneficial effects of wine on the prevention of certain cancers. Grape juice and cranberry juice contains resveratrol but at levels ten times less than red wine.

LOVE this book! It made it super handy for me to incorporate Pilates back into my workout routine, add it's easier to grab this and work out while the TV is on, than it is to put on a video (TV access is challenging in my household).I also appreciated that the book had beginners and advanced exercises and very detailed images and instructions.I specifically wanted a spiral bound book so it would lay flat, and it more than does the job. The book does feature the ability to "stand" the book up for visibility during your without--I found it was too awkward to use that feature. It doesn't bother me that it's there, but for the space I have to workout (which isn't much), I couldn't position it to make it easily visible to view the pages I would like; however, this feature might be a real plus for others.I've recommended this book to others who are interested in Pilates, or in starting back into a workout routine. Love it!

For me, this has been the perfect book to begin learning Pilates, but there may be some for whom the beginning positions are still too difficult, my mother, for example, who is in her 70s. I am 47 and have been working out in one way, shape, or form for 30 years. I may have thought I was in pretty good shape, but Pilates is a whole different type of working out, and I love it. After years of high impact aerobics and other activities that have stressed my joints, I am thrilled to find a way of working out that is an incredibly powerful one without my stressing already weak ankles and knees. I was shocked to find out how much control and concentration are involved in completing the exercises using the correct form. I am fortunate to have become acquainted with a cousin recently who has been a personal trainer for 20 years or more and now solely trains people using Pilates. She gave me a bit of the history and information about core principles so I was armed with enough information to go looking for a good book. This one has been everything I hoped it would be. The author very carefully explains the important principles and then goes on to offer both a basic program and a main program, as well as optional additional exercises. One thing I love is that the book really is step by step. For someone like me, who hadn't had the faintest idea of how or where to begin, it has been so helpful having a book that tells me exactly what to do in exactly what order with exactly the right kind of photographs and illustrations, tips, and guidance. All of the postures and guidelines are straight forward and easy to understand. And after just one day of attempting the exercises, I felt the wonderful soreness that comes when you've used muscles you didn't even know you had. I continued to follow the program as the author suggested and in no time I was feeling the difference. She is right on. You need to take your time to get the exercises right, it's not about how many reps you can do and how quickly you can do them, and you really have to pay attention to your breathing and how your body is responding to the movements. And my core, which is what I really wanted to improve, has changed dramatically. Each time I start with a new exercise that I can't quite do and then continue to work at it and notice after a period of time that it becomes easier and easier to do, I know I'm getting stronger. So I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in starting a Pilates workout routine. I think even if I were only 20, the exercises would be challenging and quite transformative. The only "negative", which isn't really a negative, is that if these exercises and routines were all I ever did and I never had ways of varying them, I would get bored. So, the book isn't everything. I still have other books because I need varying routines and exercises for the workout to remain engaging and interesting. But, without a doubt, this is an excellent place to start!!!

I bought this book when it first came out, and used it to death. I recently bought my second copy to replace the first. It is open day and night; and I just use it when I think of it, and the last thing at night before bed. Pilates is superb for non-impact strengthening, especially of the core muscles. Stewart's clear page-by-page instructions make it easy to use.The most important thing for me is that I do not require constantly ramping things up, I don't need constant variety in a workout: I just want to work out and get on with my day.

Good for belly reducing

The book "Pilates for Beginners" is just what it says. It is a great way to start, for someone who has never been exposed to this type of exercise. The book even gives you two ways to do the Pilates, one is the regular correct way, and the other is an abbreviated easy way. Perfect for beginners. It has pictures, easy description, everything.

Excellent value. My physical therapist suggested this and the price was right, the book in excellent condition and the program is just what I needed!

I was happy to see this book available used, it's great for beginners. Really got me in shape when I used it before. Great for core strengthening from zero. Fast shipping, book in good shape.
